PIMP POST - Akihabara@DEEP

*FANFARE*

For the past... some... weeks, something has taken over my life. Something strange, and new, and terrible. I caught it, slowly and painfully, bit by bit and byte by byte from sluggish torrent downloads, and have been laboriously undertaking the (even slower and more painful) task of spreading this horrifying plague to others. I shall take them down with me, I think to myself, as I sit hollow-eyed in front of the computer screen. I ain't going down alone.

And now, finally, the time has come. Friendslist, I've been watching a New Show. And I'm here to pimp it to you, whether you like it or not.

Ladies and gentlemen:

Akihabara@DEEP

Akihabara (Akiba, for short) is a district of Tokyo that can aptly be described as a mecca for otaku - fans of anime, manga, video games - cosplayers, electronics geeks, and figurine collectors. Akihabara is Geek Central. Fanboy City. Nerdtropolis. It's like every convention you ever went to rolled into one. Against this brightly-coloured, beeping, blinking backdrop, we have a cast of six otaku misfits, drawn together by the administrator of an online agony aunt/chatroom site, Yui. Each of these social rejects has their own set of troubles and dysfunctions, but each also has their own particular field of expertise. When Yui dies a mysterious death(!!!!), and can no longer provide a kind ear and ready advice for the denizens of Akiba, these six otaku band together to form the troubleshooter group Akihabara@DEEP - vowing to protect Akihabara, and solve the problems of its inhabitants.

And that doesn't even begin to cover it.

Guys, this show is both surprisingly touching, and s;kdjfaldfs hysterically demented. You know the kind of thing that makes people stick their heads in the door to ask what the hell you're laughing at, and YOU CAN'T EVEN BEGIN TO EXPLAIN? I wrote out two whole different paragraphs about all the ways this show is brilliant, frustrated by my inability to convey it in words - but then realised that I can really sum it up by saying that in one episode, they deal with the issue of suicide clubs, and in another, they fight zombies. sd;lkfjasldkjf. Zombies. ZOMBIES. All whilst being a complete and 100% validation of pathetic geekdom. I think that's what I love best about it (apart from the crack, and the zombies, and the villains, and the cosplay, and Izumu). It never tries to make its protagonists not complete losers. The heroes of this show are socially-retarded lamerzoids, AND THAT'S OKAY.

OKAY ANYWAY. LET'S MEET THEM.

Cast@DEEP

The somewhat-reluctant idealist leader of Akihabara@DEEP. Shy, earnest, and just a little bit spastic, Page is like an excitable and large-haired puppy - only with a debilitating stutter, instead of a tendency to widdle on the carpet (which is a shame, because he really has quite the way with words). Very little can get Page down for long, but behind that sunny, slightly cross-eyed smile, he can be a real deep thinker, and feels a lot of responsibility for his team-mates. Still, nobody can stay angry at him for long for making the hard decisions, because dammit, he's just that adorable.

Or at least, he tries to be. His efforts are somewhat hindered by his crippling gynophobia (but pin-ups, anime bishoujo, and ero-ero figurines are okay!) and rampant OCD - Box, at all times, wears multiple layers and several pairs of gloves to minimise contact with the dirty, dirty world around him. He changes them every two hours. The subtitles call it a 'hygiene disorder'. I laugh. Every time. He likes to pretend he's 'ard, but we know better.

Don't mess with Akira, or she will squeeze the top of your head off with her smooth yet deadly thighs. Like Buffy, if Buffy had a badittude problem, fought in girlie cage-matches for money, and part-timed as an internet pin-up idol and the main attraction at an Akihabara maid café in a short pink skirt and frilly blouse. And, you know, were Japanese. Makes very bad smoothies, but a very good friend. BASICALLY SHE'S AWESOME, OKAY.

Marginally more laid-back than Box and Page, Taiko spends most of his time listening to, playing, or composing music - his digital ring-tones are one of @DEEP's main sources of income. He might just be the most well-adjusted of the merry band, if it weren't for the minor fact that blinking lights and other forms of, er, overstimulation make his eyes roll back in his head and his body sort of... freeze up. No, not epilepsy. He... freezes. Smoke comes out of his head. Yeah, I don't know. It's kind of freaky.

Izumu is cooler than you. Accept it now, and your life will be easier. A computer genius from her tender toddler years, Izumu(/Izm) is the digital brain of @DEEP. She comes across as very cool, aloof, distant, reserved, and all those other words I'm too lazy to find a thesaurus to help me list - but underneath, she may just be the biggest softie of them all. Well, except for Page. Maybe. Also, you haven't lived until you've seen Izumu have a complete break with reality when a computer program she's working on starts to behave in a way that, well, does not compute. Izumu.

...Yep.

NAKAGOMI TAKESHI: THE VILLAIN

s;ldjfhlha;sldkfh BEST VILLAIN EVER. OH MY GOD. I CAN'T EVEN. sd;khfsldasldf. I didn't make a banner for him because I'm about to picspam the life out of you. He lives on Chupa-Chups lollipops, and makes his secretary wear neko-ears and pretend to be a cat. *_* LOOK, GUYS.

THAT'S KANEDA'S BIKE FROM AKIRA. BY THE WAY.

I've already downloaded and watched all the episodes several times, but maybe I should redownload them all again just for the satisfaction? Okay, maybe not, but this show is my life blood at the moment also XD.

Yay for pimp posts! I loved all your little bios about each other the characters XD. But... but... do you not like Nakagomi Takeshi for the same reason I do? For the BEST reason? Because when I think "Nakagomi Takeshi," I think... "OMG, THAT'S THE GUY THAT SPANKED HIS CUTE LITTLE BUSINESSMAN INSUBORDINATE WITH A GIANT CHUPPA-CHUP WHILE COSPLAYING AS CHAR." Maybe not everyone has that reaction XD? Of course, making his same insubordinate wear kitty ears was amazing also, so I'll just stop blabbering about his ULTIMATE KINKY'NESS right now XDD.

Anyway, thanks so much for making such a cool post ^_^. Hopefully more people will be drawn to the dark @deep side.

Okay, I'm just gonna go watch that moving gif you made of Page shaking his head cutely for... oh, about 20 hours. Ja! *watches entranced*

[identity profile] toko.livejournal.com 2007-04-06 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I'm sold!

...although for some reason I don't seem to be able to download episode 4.

[identity profile] toko.livejournal.com 2007-04-06 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
That is very cockfacey. And, um... I think they may have also been cockfaces with episode 2, as it claims to be 700Mb but the file I downloaded is only about 400 and is clearly not the whole episode.

*so tempted* it IS only 11 episodes!

I saw episode 1 - and there will be more this weekend, muahahaha. Geeks unite!! I thought it was hilarious, though surprisingly violent. Takeshi is especially perplexing. He's so clearly one of them -- this is what happens to otaku gone baaaad.

I also have this weird urge to make a dolphin icon for trying times. XD

Kuuuuukukukuku... what is that?? I agree, it must be the eyebrows. They are diabolical.

The Japanese are so weird. And yet, I love it. So weird.

[livejournal.com profile] marksykins linked me here. I am definitely downloading. This show looks AWESOME. Image

[identity profile] gabbysun.livejournal.com 2007-04-09 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
HOLY CRAP this show looks amazing. After one episode I am pretty much obsessed, but the second episode is not working for me. . . ? I think I have the same problem as [livejournal.com profile] tok0; the file is around 400 MB and thus devastatingly incomplete. :(

(P.S. Lady, you have just proved the catalyst of the the next eleven most amazing and least productive hours of my life. I will probably have to pimp this all around my school, which incidentally does not allow movies or TV shows BUT THIS WILL BE WORTH IT.)

[identity profile] toko.livejournal.com 2007-04-10 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
I finally found working episodes, and am making my way through them. And, uh.

HOW COULD YOU DO THIS TO ME. I DIDN'T NEED ANOTHER FANDOM. YET I AM IN LOVE. SKLGHS:LGL;LKSJKG.

(god, if Akira were any more awesome I think it would actually be illegal.)

Hey, this is great post!
When you said, "You know when you affix any statement about people with the clause TOGETHER, THEY FIGHT CRIME? That's this show."
I sniggered and thought it was just about the perfect 2-second explanation for the show. I hope you don't mind, but I kind of quoted you in my journal when I was talking about @DEEP, and made a link here. Thanks! <3

[identity profile] blissful-naive.livejournal.com 2008-05-09 11:24 am (UTC)(link)
This might be a bit late but i just want to tell you that you are <3 (and WIN~!!!) for posting this!!! love the banners for the charaters.. and yesh, he's the coolest villain evaarrrr!!! xD i lol'ed when he let his assistant wear nekomimi. xD

[identity profile] moonbyrd.livejournal.com 2008-05-19 04:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh my god, I would totally download this, but the files seem to be gone. I've been trying to get my hands on copies of this show for months!!. Aaaaaaand I'm memming this post because it is love.

The first time I tried to watch this show I got about twenty minutes into the first episode and gave up, because I didn't understand any of the otaku-culture references. The second time? I marathoned. And marathoned again. >.>

[identity profile] rockthetardis.livejournal.com 2008-12-11 05:00 am (UTC)(link)
I WISH I HAD FASTER INTERNET SO THAT I COULD HAVE SEEN THIS IN LIKE... DAYS INSTEAD OF A FREAKING WEEK. ARGH!!

However, I'm such a nerdslut for this show that I am downloading TV-Nihon's subs for the director's cuts of the episodes. WORDS CANNOT EXPRESS MY LOVE FOR THIS SHOW. IT GOES DOWN TO MY BONES. IF IT WERE A MAN I WOULD MARRY IT.

And oh, I never thought I'd warm up to a character like Daruma-san. That man is ♥, even when he has to poop and is being ecchi. XD

I started watching RH + shortly after watching Akihabara@DEEP, and even though it's only thirty minutes long (which means shorter download times, whee!), and has gay vampires WHO FIGHT CRIME, it is sadly lacking teh crack. :(

[identity profile] masakochan.livejournal.com 2009-01-22 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't download the eps from here, but just wanted to pop and say that I agree- Akihabara@DEEP is so much fhdsafnsjakfnas love! xD <3
