Life surprisingly sane today, helped in large part by a surprise day off from work - although it would have been nice to have found out about it before showing up. Made wise decision to avoid homestead nevertheless, and have thus far spent morning sequestered on an old squashy couch in the Gresham lounge with a pot of tea and Desolation Road. Also f-list links to posts on cultural literacy, though that was... not so relaxing (dlflkfhg THIS THREAD, second coment, can't even properly articulate reasons for RAEG). Day maintains overall level of Good, however, leaving me to ponder whether or not to head over to a nearby showing of A Single Man in... very shortly. On the one hand, movie generally agreed to be amazing; on the other, probably depressing as hell.

Ponder ponder.

(Sorry, I have Sudden RL Stuff going on at the moment that I don't even have the energy to make a post about, and I still constantly feel as though I am carrying a lingering 2-3 hours of jetlag from the other week. This is not the substantive life update post you are looking for.)

(Also, I really hate salt and vinegar.)

...as I tinker with an LJ layout for my [livejournal.com profile] help_haiti auction.

WHAT is your name?
WHAT is your favourite colour?

WHAT is your screen resolution?

Scaled positioning is all very well, but sometimes when you have a badass background banner, you just need to use fixed widths, goddammit. Also this layout is a bit... adventurous ([livejournal.com profile] shati and I coined the term 'fashug' for 'fashionably ugly', see: hipsterism and the 80s), and I am concerned that it will look cluttered as all hell on non-widescreen monitors.

You know. More than it's supposed to.

harnessing the power of rule 34 for good

In the wake of the disaster in Haiti, I know I am not the only one who has been astounded and moved by the way in which fandom has come together, both in smaller groups and under the larger aegis of [livejournal.com profile] help_haiti, to give so generously both of its time and from its pocket. However, amongst all this industry and all this incredible massing of resources, one very important fact has been forgotten.

And it is this:

Fandom's greatest power is its ability to produce porn. Porn, for anything and anyone, and at any time. And with great power comes great responsibility.

Ladies and gentlemen, I give to you:

Pimp it, poke it, jump in the sack and have a tumble with it. We've only just set it up, and it's very lonely over there. We need a few things to get the ball rolling - like the handful of prep coins in a busker's suitcase, or wearing an awesome shirt to spark conversation. GO GO GO.

Currently holed up chez [livejournal.com profile] silveraspen with food poisoning, and playing phone/email tag with various and sundry to get my flight(s) home rebooked for tomorrow. Woo?

In any case - have been in Denver past few days with Many People, and apart from this recent development, having a thoroughly excellent time (weekend rating: 5/5 hats). Therefore: v. behind on internet; if anything important, comment!

OKAY BOXCON TYPES. I have taken the excuse of upcoming hijinks to a] treat myself to a shiny, new, and most importantly non-broken portable 500GB hdd, and b] indulge my apparent morbid obsession for organised lists. THEREFORE, if you are likewise going to be packing digital heat and looting files with abandon while in Denver, proceed ye below the cut for a complete(ish) list of TV shows and movies currently sitting on my family's living room PC. I'd list my DVD collection here as well, but... I don't love you guys that much.

Yo-ho, yo-ho... )

If you only want a specific season of something, let me know in the comments - otherwise I'll like as not just bring the whole thing, if I have the space.

Yuletide

Okay, this is just a quick PSA to say that AO3 is dead under server load, and keeps timing out when I try to comment, and also that I have only had about two hours' sleep in the last thirty. But Yuletide writers, if any of you come across this, I just want to say - oh my god. Your stories, all THREE of them, are so uncannily perfect and so exactly what I wanted and needed from canon that I may have, uh. Misted up a little, reading them? Yeah. :') And Yuletide Madness writer, I haven't been able to read yours yet, but thank you so much for taking the time during the crazed frenzy that is Christmas Eve to write me a little stocking stuffer. I can't wait!

BUT ANYWAY, yes. Individual comments are coming, as soon as I can string words together without burbling like a lunatic and/or the AO3 server stops eating the page when I try to write one. And also recs. And just - ugh, I am so happy. I could not have wished for a more amazing and incredible first Yuletide.

Excuse me, I have something in my eye.

This is just to say

Just wandered downstairs between Friday Night Lights episodes to find the house oddly empty. Poked my head into where my sister was watching tv to ask where everyone had disappeared to, and was informed that, somewhere between an hour and two hours ago, my mum got a call from the hospital to say that her potassium levels were 'very high' and that she should come in right now. Like, tv-still-on, glass-of-wine-and-half-smoked-cigarette-still-on-the-table right now.

Er?

(She's not answering her phone, which isn't exactly helpful - but I am fairly confident that this is because my grandmother is probably custodian of her handbag while tests and whatnot are being run. And I'm not sure my grandmother would even know which side of a mobile phone to speak into, never mind the bleeping and the flashing and the pressing of buttons.)

Taking a break from, uh, sucking at LJ to pass along the word: according to a recent changelog, LJ intends to implement a mandatory binary male/female gender field during account creation, removing the option for 'Unspecified'. If this makes you go "L;SEKFJSLDAHFSFUJFJFS!", as it rightly should, follow the link above to find out what you can do.

- Indie (the dog; incorrigibly scruffy Westie) had an operation yesterday to remove an infection from her ear that threatened to spread to the brain.

+ Operation was a success! At least insofar as the vet can tell, and I am inclined to trust his opinion.

- Dog, avec shaved bits and fresh stitches and whatnot, looks like Phantom of the Opera - and is none too happy about the cone she has to wear, either. :(

+ Watched both Master & Commander and The Girl Who Leapt Through Time today; as per usual, bawled through the last 10-20 minutes of the latter. IDEK, as soon as Makoto starts sobbing, I fucking lose it, every time.

- Was able to devote such time to movie-watching thanks to a cough that would not stop for more than two minutes at a time; that therefore kept me up all night; that, by morning, had resulted in retching, additional back/shoulder cramps, and also the feeling that I was coughing up little pieces of my own throat meat. Delightful!

+ Ice-cream!

? Eyebrow-shaping is scary, and I do not yet know if I like the results. I mean, they're not hideous or anything - I'm just not sure if it's an upgrade or a slight downgrade. Damn my ill-defined arches and my ambiguous facial structure!

- So tired that I am physically shaking.

+ Baby has her first LBD, just in time for next Monday's Commencement (aka graduation ceremony). It is pretty smokin', and manages to do things like accentuate the epicness of my chestular area while ALSO (it being really rather modest as far as LBDs go) enabling me to e.g. lean forward at more than a 20° angle without spilling everywhere. /TMI?

+ Also a Jeeves & Wooster short story omnibus, Unseen Academicals, and Boneshaker, by Cherie Priest.

- I really-truly only meant to buy the Wodehouse, and to wait until UA was out in paperback, sdlfkahslfh my wallet.

+ Seriously though, ♥dress♥! Mostly I am amazed that I actually got up the courage to buy one in the first place; I seriously think it must be... what, four years since I've worn a skirt/dress? Five? Pretending not to have plus-size body image issues is all very well, but I'll pretend not to have plus-size body image issues while fully covered from elbow to ankle, thankyouverymuch. That is, until now. Granted, I'll be wearing 150 denier opaque black tights - but they'll be able to see where my calves are. :OOOOO

- Now I have to go buy a shrug-jackety-thing-whatever to go over it, ahhhhh does it never end.

At lunchtime, I am making a run to the bookshop - having read The Graveyard Book, which I adored for the same reasons I adore Neverwhere, has me craving... more of the same, basically. So! YA recs of the 'if you liked _______, you'll love ________' sort in the next 20 minutes, GO GO GO.

Or, you know. Later on, as well. But I am coming out of that shop with something to fill the gaping hole in my heart left by Silas and Bod and Miss Lupescu, and without recs, I will (as I inevitably do, without ever learning from my mistakes) probably just buy whatever one has the prettiest cover.
