sophistry: ([Misc] watch each other)
Okay, Batman: Gotham Knight is officially one of the most visually awesome things I've seen in a while. Except for the one segment that drew Bruce Wayne as a bishounen, which. Um. He is a handsome playboy, and yet... no. It made up for it in all other departments, though! And, you know, the feature as a whole had some pretty cool story elements as well. Plus which, I'm pretty sure I caught themes from/hints of the 90's Batman cartoon theme tune in the music (likewise some of the character designs, esp. the first), and 90's Batman cartoon = hardcore fucking YESSSS. MY CHILDHOOD. I kept having nerdgasms at the way Batman's cape was animated - having flashbacks to all that was perfect and golden and geeky in my youth.

As a result, though, I kind of want to start reading Batman now, which is wrong not only in the sense that it is a betrayal of my erstwhile Marvel roots (X-Men!!! I remember when you did not suck donkey cock), but also in that goddammit, I swore I was done with the moneyhole that is 'mainstream' comics. I wish I knew how to quit you. ;_;

If I ever manage to work up the balls to do it, DC dudes on my flist, where should I start? I know I have heard good things about Frank Miller's run on the Dark Knight, but at the same time... it is Frank Miller. I am afraid I will be infected and warped by his special brand of crazy. Maybe the World's Finest stuff? As with Batman, I possess/have acquired through osmosis only the rudimentary Geek Knowledge 101 factoid requirements re: Supes (I never even watched Smallville!), but I am a sucker for awesome partner(/friend)ships.1

1Kind of a maaajor factor in the temptation to suck it up and jump into Iron Man canon. Iron Man and Captain America! Together, they fight crime! Really, this time! On the other hand, my brain keeps rebelling at the thought of having to deal with Civil War. LOL NO, MARVELTARDS. GOT OUT JUST IN TIME, THERE. And on the other-other hand, with both this and Batman, it is hard not to feel incredibly lame for being part of the post-Hollywood squealing-fangirl influx of retardation. Even if you have always been a comic-book nerd in spirit! Come on, I got 90% of the references in 1602.

In conclusion, in terms of approachability, DC is the elite old school BNF whose fics are there for the purpose of making you feel like a fake in the fandom for not having read them, and Marvel is like the main fandom comm on LJ, or a bad RPG: where you know there must be good stories in there somewhere, but you're just afraid of all the wangst, Stus/Sues, and improbable porn you're going to have to wade through to find them. Y/N?

This was just meant to be a (sane, non-sleep-depped) post about Gotham Knight. To reiterate: sexy, sexy, sexy. Contrived accents, but still. Sexy.

ETA: The Doctor Who explosion on my flist - and reading all the posts in said explosion - is entertaining and interesting me intensely, despite(/because of/?????) never watching the show. Carry on, my friends. Carry on.
