Dear Internet,

We are now within spitting distance of three weeks to St. Patrick's Day. As such, please be aware of the potential for outbursts of extreme Irish Rage, and carry your hard-hats and wank-brollies with you at all times.

Love and kisses,
Sophie

these people just need to admit that they just like to get drunk and stop looking for excuses.

my mum has a guesthouse, right? and this one time, she had this american woman staying there, and she seemed really gloomy the night she arrived but no one paid any heed, and the next morning at breakfast she started CRYING, so mum came in and was like "hey, what's wrong? are you okay?" and the reason she was crying was because the DAMN HOUSE HAD A ROOF ON IT and wasn't like, basically a thigeen thing with straw on the top and chickens outside. THIS IS WHAT PEOPLE THINK IRELAND IS. it makes me pull my hair out.

that's basically the exact reaction mum had. and her staff (most of which are not irish at all, actually). and me, when she first told me. honestly, i blame the tv stations, they're the ones that keep playing... i don't know, 'the field' and that film about darby o'fecking'gill or whatever. how are people meant to actually know it's not like that if that's all they're seeing? and james joyce, we can blame him too.

i think there should be a new law. everyone who even thinks for two seconds about claiming to be "irish" should be made watch the commitments and read the entire ross o'carroll kelly series before they're allowed to do so. see if they want to be irish then!

...i know it's wrong but i laughed at that anyway.

we're like the mary sues of ireland fandom-- how dare we be actually irish and spoiling everyone's fun and we don't even appreciate it anyway!

i suppose maybe it is, really. it's a bit like rpf? this is kind of why i avoid rpf, because there are real people involved and we don't know what we're talking about with our random assumptions...

...I'm sorry for thread jumping, but...

Oh my god. O_O

oh no, not at all. XD i need something to take my mind off this evil html project where things are moving by 3 pixels for NO REASON AT ALL.

pretty bad, huh? this woman wasn't even that old, somewhere between 40 and 60 as i can remember, so there's basically no excuse at all.

I remember when my American relations came over a few years ago and they were shocked we had a working computer and internet.

I joked we'd got running water five years before, but they didn't laugh. Possibly they might have thought I was serious.

i was about to make a yes-irish-people-have-the-internet joke about my html project there, but i thought it was beneath us both but dear god you actually have a real story about that and i am not nearly as surprised as i should be.

possibly they might have! that's so alarming, really.

also, i have to ask, who is that in your icon? i am staring at her.

[identity profile] kessie.livejournal.com 2008-02-24 11:21 am (UTC)(link)
Very few things about Ye Olde Ireland surprise me anymore. :/

I... have no idea, lol! I got the icon from a fairy tale fashion shoot from [Unknown site tag] (tag: fairy tales). I think she's supposed to Sleeping Beauty, but I took it because she's, well, pretty. And the rose. XD

i'm sure we're being just as bad for generalizing about the people who believe these things, but really-- i have MET people who think like this. so have you. i challenge them to find the irish person who fits their bloody belief! (in this century, that is.)

oh, right. XD nm, then. yes, very pretty.
