sophistry: ([Cinderella Man] a londonderry air)

(no subject)

I am so tired, I feel like my eyeballs are actually melting inside my head. HOWEVER, there is a seminar on the history of museums and galleries in Ireland from 1773-present that I want to go to (shut up) at 4:15, so I will bravely soldier on.

I am frantically trying to come up with fandoms I want to nominate for Yuletide, and am blanking pretty horrifically. Sadly, I am also fairly sure that this will only get worse when it comes to actual sign-ups, ohgod. At the moment, my list of possible fandom nominees is as followed:

Aubreyad (obviously)
Rome (also obvious)
Bones (if it still qualifies as small enough; idk, I'm not involved with the fandom at all)
Watchmen (I am pretty unsure about this - how the hell do you fic WATCHMEN; it almost seems sacrilegious - but I just want something to cherish before the movie unleashes a tide of fangirls intent on redeeming the Comedian because he is played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan or pretending that Nite Owl isn't kind of gone to seed or woobiefying Rorschach I COULD GO ON D: D: D:)
World War Z (zombies = awesome; alternate history = awesome; alternate zombie history = double-plus awesome)
To Say Nothing of the Dog (/general Connie Willis timetravelverse)

And... that is all I can think of at the moment, though I know there must be more small fandoms that I love. I mean, at present this list means I don't have to narrow anything down, but... you know. D:

ANYWAY, DUDES - are you taking part? And if so, what are you nominating?

(Don't judge me, but I am also kind of tempted to ask for platonic! RPF of... certain people. I won't lie, I totally want them to be BFF.)

...Oh, maybe Deadwood. Or Cinderella Man. Or The Iron Giant...

To Say Nothing of the Dog! Slapstick period comedy fic! <333

I am indeed participating; my nominations consisted of five zillion Diana Wynne Jones fandoms (I do not intend to actually request for all of these but I had to make sure all the smaller ones got properly represented!) and Cold Comfort Farm (the book involves a Sensible Lady tackling ridiculous genre conventions in the English Gothic, clearly there must be a sequel in which she tackles ridiculous sci-fi/fantasy genre conventions!), the Company books (Joseph and Lewis buddyfic! Latif being awesome fic! ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES), and the Bloody Jack books that I wrote my thesis on (there needs to be a thriving lesbian slash fandom for these books and it fills me with tragedy that it does not yet exist.)

Are you and [livejournal.com profile] themis friends yet? You are the only people I know who read certain books. I feel like I have encouraged this before.

AND Sophie, I think those are all marvelous choices!

I LOVE Quest for a Maid! I didn't think anyone else had ever read it!

Dude Emmy! I have read, I have raved, I have bought the action figure! Well, I would if they made action figures. WHICH THEY SHOULD. With bonus whale-rescuing action!

[identity profile] areyoumymemmy.livejournal.com 2008-10-22 03:08 pm (UTC)(link)
They SO should! Man, now I am desperately wanting to reread and I can't because the book is at my parents' house!

Well, I can go reread To Say Nothing of the Dog, at least.

Both of these books were in my 'Coming With Me To New York, Why Yes I Really Do Need Those Six Giant Boxes, Shut Up' pile. :D

(But before last year I had forgotten about it for years, and then I rediscovered it on a winter break and was like :O!!!!!)

[identity profile] areyoumymemmy.livejournal.com 2008-10-22 03:24 pm (UTC)(link)
When I moved to Seattle, I could only take as much stuff as I could fit in the spare bits of a station wagon, so many of my books did not make it. (And yet, somehow Mr. Emmy and I have ended up with more books than we have bookshelves for, and we have four ceiling-height bookshelves and three more smaller ones. IT IS A DISEASE.)

I've been smuggling my books out here a couple at a time since then, just by sticking a few in the old suitcase whenever I go back home. Next time, I add Quest for a Maid!

I read it in middle school and promptly forgot it until Becca reviewed it!

I really hadn't thought about it in ages, but man. When I was younger I LOVED that book. I think a lot of it was the Inge storyline. I mean, I liked Meg lots, but Inge was a really compelling character.

Becca, you have already nominated the Company books! And I trust you not to change your nomination! Which means I can go back and redo my list of nominations, switching out Company and putting Frances Hodgson Burnett's Lost Prince back in. (I took Lost Prince off because it was tragic that whoever nominated Marion Zimmer Bradley's Darkover books only put the two sweet gay boys Regis and Danilo on the character list and forgot my beloved ambiguously bisexual Free Amazons. So I had to nominate Darkover and add Magda, Jaelle and Camilla to the character list.)

Sophie, as you can probably tell, I'm finally giving in and doing Yuletide. The book I'm most excited about nominating is Catherynne M Valente's Orphan's Tales, because of its antipapesses and female monster pirates and storytelling Stars and sheer Just That Coolness. Not only is the book awesome, but the author is also, and she has given enthusiastic permission, say rather, encouragement, to anyone who might want to create fanworks based on her writing. Maybe if OT's on Yuletide people will start taking advantage of this permission.

I have! There is no way I am changing that nomination. :D :D And I think there are all the characters in there that I would wish to nominate; at least I saw Joseph and Lewis and Latif and Victor and Van Drouten and that is more than enough to choose from right there!

Ooh, I really should read Lost Prince. It is one of the few FHBs I never did when I was small!

Its plot barely holds together, and the surprise ending is the kind of surprise ending that is only a surprise if you haven't noticed the enormous falling anvil that landed on you twelve chapters before the end. (I did not notice the surprise ending when I first read the book, but I was eight.) That said, LP has the same kind of Awww, such a cute little attempt Gothic plot, I want to pet it thing going as the Robert Lewis Stevenson you just blogged about. Also, post-canon slash just writes itself.

[personal profile] skygiants 2008-10-22 03:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Falling anvils entertain me also! I like to sidestep them and watch the carnage. :D And I love adorable little attempts at Gothic plots! This may be a book for me.

Then go and read so I can snark with you! See if you can find an unabridged version. The one in print when I was a kid was abridged, which meant the editors left in all the adventure but skipped a number of weirdly hilarious Theosophical and pseudo-Buddhist interludes.

(Sorry for epic comment thread, Sophie!)

It is hilarious! And adorable! See my comment to Rym.

You will see the flaws in it all over the place, but you should totally read it anyway. If you can't find an unabridged version from the library, I can grab my copy when I'm home for Thanksgiving. It's one of the books I keep pondering bringing back anyway. I'm sure it's unabriged, because it's fairly old and it's full of the hilarious Theosophical and pseudo-Buddhist interludes. (My Orientalisms, let me show you them.)

Ohhh, that book. It is anvillicious in SO MANY WAYS and ridiculously Orientalist and the entire thing is starry-eyed and I kind of love it a lot.

And you are 100% right about the slash, and IMO about canon-timeline slash in the older generation as well.

...yes, of course, canon-timeline slash in the older generation. Lazarus as much as says outright that he's passionately in love with Stefan Loristan.

Uh huh. The Rat is only following in his illustrious and utterly devoted footsteps!

...Which is also pretty much canon, so hey.

This is a book that I found slashy way, way before I developed actual slash goggles.

Stay awake! You can do it! I am currently feeling similarly, but kind of have to go to class from 1-4.

Yuletide: I think Bones is eligible? I really hope Bones is eligible and that people nominate it, anyway, because it's one of, like, three fandoms that I'm willing to offer to write. Also, I feel the SAME WAY about Watchmen -- the idea of trying to write fic is kind of terrifying, but I want to see something good before the movie comes out and the fangirl deluge commences.

I nominated ... uh, I am pretty sure it was The Red Star, Star Wars: X-Wing (books or comics), Run Fatboy Run, Iron Man (comics), Burn Notice, and Hellboy (movie); I say 'pretty sure' because I was changing my mind so much that I'm not entirely sure what I nominated now. I'm living on the wild side with X-Wing and the Iron Man comics; I'm not sure either will be considered a small enough fandom. We'll see, I guess!

Obama-Clinton RPF terrifies me a little. But there's something terrifying every year, and I'm pretty sure it couldn't be any more traumatic than Care Bear orgies or Tom Brady and some other quarterback sexually dominating Peyton Manning. :D

[identity profile] unravels.livejournal.com 2008-10-22 02:27 pm (UTC)(link)
In Bruges!! That is up there, so I had to nominate it. \o/ And Wings of Desire/Faraway So Close, because. Duh. Ji said it was sort of sacrilegious, and I've seen similar comments about Castiel-mooning in the SPN fandom. >.> Dude. I am driving that handbasket. Anyway, I nominated those. And PO'B, obviously, and some kind of predictable tiny fandoms (there can never be enough Murder Mysteries fic. EVER).

And I finally have To Say Nothing of the Dog! I got it toward the end of my lying-around-on-drugs phase, which meant I went back to work and haven't yet read any of it. :/ Hopefully I will get to read it before signups. o.O

Obama/Clinton RPF... well, I could handle them being BFF, but it sort of looks like that's where they are now. Or that's what they're projecting, anyway. D'awwww.

I hear there is new Watchmen (movie) footage. Torn! Though I'll probably give in before March, who are we kidding.

Oh shit Yuletide! I should do that. I think I will second [livejournal.com profile] unravels suggestion of In Bruges. And World War Z hell yes.

I dunno what else. *frowns* I'm bad at this game.

I signed up, I signed up! As I have every year. *squishes Yuletide*

I nominated Neverwhere, Avatar, Fringe, Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood, and, uh, I forgot the fifth.
