Outlander

So take Beowulf, add a dash of Transformers and a sprinkle of Braveheart and throw them all in a blender with Predator. That's Outlander. It's basically a riff on the Norse epic, where Grendel is a wild ball of claw-y, tentacle-y vicious alien death that has crash-landed in 8th century Norway, Beowulf is the revenge-obsessed space marine (played by Jesus) on its trail, and Hrothgar is John Hurt.

And it's a bit like Snakes on a Plane, too: you either go 'what, no, get the fuck away from me', or you go 'LOL AWESOME'.

As of yesterday evening, you may count me firmly in the latter category.

LOL AWESOME.

Right? I had a spasm of hilarity when I saw him. The thing is, though, the movie is not entirely dumb! I mean, it has pretty much everything you'd expect when you see the words 'VIKINGS VS ALIENS', but it also does at least a couple of things that I did not expect, and which made me thumbs-up in pleasant surprise. Idk, I think that basically the best way to approach Outlander is, whenever it confuses you by being serious/unserious/good/bad/etc., to just sit back and remind yourself that, uh, you are watching a movie about VIKINGS VS ALIENS.

Also, Viking Ron Perlman crushes a guy's head with his twin hammers of wrath.

I... will take your word for it! It has been way too long since I have seen the movies, and I am not familiar with comics canon.

Hm. I left and came back, and am now wondering what exactly I was referring to. Probably the fact that John Hurt played Ron Perlman's father in Hellboy, and I won't be able to think of anything else when hearing their voices in Outlander?

Then again, maybe I was referring to, like, tiny green men and the evolution of cell biology. I'm never entirely sure what exactly I'm saying when I start typing after I haven't slept in a while.

It really is one of those movies like SoAP, where if the basic premise doesn't immediately make you lulz in glee, you will never, ever get it.

Snakes on a Plane! Though the comparison might be a bit misleading, because it is not ridiculous in the same way as that movie. It is just... it does what it says on the tin. Snakes are on a plane; Vikings fight aliens.
