What a day. There may be bitching later. I JUST WANT TO LEARN, TRINITY. WHY WON'T YOU LET ME LEARN.

For now, though, on my ohjesusgivemecaffeinenow escape from the library, let me just say this.

If you want a solid and meaty period drama with complex story out its arse: don't go and see Elizabeth: The Golden Age.

If, however, you want a feast for the eyes and ears whose sheer spectacular beauty as a piece of art claws its way from the screen and speakers right down into your gut and then rips the tears out of you by force: run, don't walk, to see Elizabeth: The Golden Age.

I saw it on the Really Big Screen, and came out shaking.

I don't think I've ever really gotten the phrase 'a great and terrible beauty' until now.

Oh my god, you guys.

(Has anyone else seen it and reacted this strongly? Please say you have. Oh my GOD.)

I didn't react quite that strongly - but I did spend basically the entire movie going ". . . . FREEZE MUST ICON THAT SCENE. - NO WAIT THAT ONE. AND THAT ONE."

So I hear you, in terms of the sheer beauty of the thing.

Samantha Morton was so fabulous I was able to pretty much completely ignore the Scottish accent.

And I mean. Everyone else too. But I see Samantha Morton so rarely that I was just like *flailyhands!*

My strongest reaction to that movie was "....VISIBLE LESBIAN SUBTEXT AND OT3NESS", because my god, the dancing scene and Elizabeth losing her shit when she finds out Bess is pregnant.

...And a side of "I'M GOING TO WRITE A TEMEMRAIREVERSE FIC THAT'S GOING TO BE ALL OF THIS + ONSET OF USING FEMALE CAPTAINS FOR LONGWINGS AND IT'S GOING TO ROCK."

That said, NNNNGH VISUALSGASM.

It was so pretty! And the music was amazing. And yes, Cate in armour was GORGEOUS! I think I may have been more moved if I hadn't gone to see it with Boy I Like because I kept getting slightly distracted by thinking about him. *sigh*

YES. Oh God. It was just. Just. The costumes and Cate Blanchett's fury and the music, and oh God, that scene at the end with the veils of her dress billowing out over the map of Europe -- just such beautiful visuals. Incredible.
